Friends, if breakfast can taste like a chocolate milkshake, I’m all in.

And luckily, this dairy-free Banana Chocolate Smoothie totally does.

It’s thick, creamy, and absolutely packed with chocolatey goodness, while also being super nutritious. As in, it has a handful of spinach that’s completely undetectable AND has 16 grams of protein without using any protein powder, which makes my Registered Dietitian heart sing!

Now, if you know me, you know I’m no stranger to a delicious, protein-packed smoothie.

This chocolate banana smoothie is a current fave, but if you’re more of a fruity smoothie person, don’t sleep on my high-protein Strawberry Smoothie! It’s bursting with berry flavor, made with soy milk and frozen fruit, and packs in 20 grams of protein WITHOUT any dairy or powder. That’s a win in my books!

Why This Smoothie Tastes Like Dessert

It’s all in the ingredients, baby!

A RIPE, frozen banana: The riper the better (think: brown spots), because that’s where the natural sweetness comes in!

I’ve tested this recipe with both fresh and frozen bananas, and the frozen version is way creamier. No frozen banana? You can toss in some ice, but it won’t be quite as thick or luscious.

Cocoa powder: For tons of chocolatey goodness!

A pinch of salt: Because that brings out alllll the flavor!

A handful of spinach: Because you seriously can’t even taste it, and what kind of Dietitian would I be if I didn’t at least suggest it?!

A spoonful of flax: Not only does this add healthy fats, but it also helps to thicken the smoothie, too!

Need It Sweeter? Here’s the Fix

I’ve developed this banana chocolate smoothie recipe to make sure that it’s nice and sweet on its own, but I couldn’t blame you for wanting to bump up the sweetness a bit!

I totally recommend adding a spoonful of my 5-Minute Date Paste Caramel for some extra sweetness AND fiber! Or, a splash of maple syrup could do the trick, too! I’ve tested both and they’re both delish.

This healthy chocolate banana smoothie recipe is so good on its own, but I also love pairing it with my Easy Lemon Blueberry Overnight Oats for a more filling breakfast that only takes 5 minutes to whip up!
