Friends, it’s not often that I’m lost for words, but this Dairy-Free Chocolate Mousse seriously has me speechless.

Upon first decadent, creamy bite of this vegan mousse, I was absolutely hooked. It’s silky, smooth, and rich with chocolatey goodness, while still being packed with almost 10 grams of protein per serving!

And you know, as a Registered Dietitian, I love an easy dessert recipe that still packs a little nutrition (hello, have you tried my 4-Ingredient Vegan Nutella?!)!

When I was developing this recipe, I tested tons of versions, including one without chocolate chips (I know, bold choice). Unsurprisingly, the version with chocolate chips is so much more delicious. I had to try it, right?!

Also, a lot of chocolate mousse recipes use avocado, so I tested a version of this recipe that uses avocado, but personally, I think this one is so much better without it. The texture is kind of like a mix between chocolate mousse and ice cream, since it’s a little stiffer than your traditional mousse.

So What’s the Secret Ingredient?

Drumroll, please… Silken tofu! Okay, I know what you might be thinking, tofu in a dessert?! But trust me when I say that you can’t even taste it, and the silken tofu gives this vegan chocolate mousse the most creamy, whipped-like texture.

If you’re a tofu hater, I have no shortage of easy and delicious tofu recipes that will definitely change your mind. But you can totally start with this one, because I can say with almost one hundred percent confidence that you’ll be obsessed after trying this recipe!

If you’re looking for another snack that tastes like dessert, why not try my Lemon Coconut Energy Balls, since they only take 15 minutes to make!

More Optional Toppings or Add-Ins

Honestly, you don’t need ANYTHING to make this protein chocolate mousse better, but I have tested it lots of different ways, and here are some of the versions and other uses for it that I think are amazing:

  • Sprinkle with coconut flakes for extra texture.
  • Blend in a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter for a peanut butter chocolate version!
  • Stir in some crushed hazelnuts or walnuts into the mousse before letting it set in the fridge for extra crunch!
  • Add in some instant coffee into the mousse for coffee-chocolatey goodness.
  • Pair it with sliced fruit as a delicious chocolate dip.
  • Top with whipped cream for the ultimate dessert!
  • Use this mousse as a healthy frosting on brownies, cupcakes, whatever!

Dairy-Free Chocolate Mousse (With Silken Tofu!)

Ingredients

  • 300 g silken tofu
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt,

Equipment

  • High speed blender or food processor

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to the high speed blender or food processor and blend until smooth. You may need to stop the blender, tamp down the ingredients, and start again a few times to get the blender started.
  • Add the mixture to a jar or container with a lid and place in the fridge to set for a minimum of 2 hours (4 hours ideally). Once it's set, serve and enjoy!

Notes

While this dairy-free chocolate mousse is totally delicious even after 2 hours of resting time in the fridge, I do recommend letting it set for at least 4 hours to get the best texture.
If you need tips to melt your chocolate chips, I like microwaving them in a microwave safe ramekin for 30 second intervals, until about half of the chocolate chips are melted, then stirring the chocolate chips until they’re all melted. You can also use a double boiler instead!
