As a Registered Dietitian, I’m constantly looking for new healthy snack ideas, and I’m prettyyy sure I hit the jackpot with these vegan brownie energy bites!

They’re decadent, chewy and chocolatey while still being absolutely packed with nutrition from the dates and walnuts, and they’re almost too easy to grab and go as a make-ahead snack!

Plus, did I mention that just like my Dairy-Free Chocolate Mousse, they’re basically a chocolate lover’s dream and only take 10 minutes to whip up. Plus, if you have a batch of my 5-Minute Date Paste Caramel as a natural sweetener in the fridge, you can totally use that as your base to streamline these healthy chocolate energy balls!

If you already have your food processor out, I highly recommend making my 5-minute Peanut Butter Chocolate Energy Balls as well so that you have a variety of flavors to choose from throughout the week!

Top Tips from my Test Kitchen!

Okay, I’ve tested these date-sweetened energy balls many times, so naturally I have a few tips to make them perfect!

  • I recommend using Medjool dates for these brownie energy balls since they’re nice and juicy, but if you don’t have medjool dates, I’ve also tested using regular ol’ deglet dates instead, and they still work! Since these type are usually drier, soak them in a bowl of hot water for 15 minutes before making the energy balls to soften them a bit!
  • We use walnuts and hemp seeds for an extra nutritional punch AND crunch, but I’ve also tested these with almonds and chia seeds and they’re still absolutely amazing!
  • We use a food processor to make these vegan energy balls, but if you don’t have a food processor, I have tested chopping all of the ingredients into small pieces and using a potato masher to combine them for the dough. While I absolutely prefer the food processor for ease, mashing the ingredients together DOES work, as long as your dates as soft enough!

If you’re looking for an energy ball recipe without dates, I HIGHLY recommend my Lemon Coconut Energy Balls with Oats & Seeds since they’re equally as delicious and easy to make but use oats as the base!

If you’re not using Medjool dates, soak them in hot water first!
