It’s safe to say that summer is in the air, and what screams summer more than a barbecue?
BBQ’s are one of the things I look forward to most in the summer time. The beautiful weather, eating outside, having a variety of different foods to choose from, it’s all wonderful to me. But up until a few years ago, if you were vegetarian, vegan or plant-based, your options were… limited, to say the least.
Now, vegan BBQ options have exploded. There are tons of different types of plant-based alternatives to the usual BBQ suspects like vegan hot dogs, sausages and burgers. But with that being said, I still love to whip up homemade vegan BBQ options to round out the meal, or for those who may not love vegan meat alternatives.
If you’re anything like me, you daydream of your next vegan BBQ and what you’ll serve or contribute, but then when the time comes, you’re at a loss of recipe ideas. This is why I’ve compiled all of my favorite easy vegan BBQ recipes for you to refer to when your friend calls you up last-minute and invites you to her BBQ. Problem solved!
Vegan BBQ Side Dishes
If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing side dish, this Lemon Garlic Asparagus is it. While the recipe is originally made by roasting in the oven, you can totally make this on the BBQ. Just place a piece of tinfoil on the barbecue to cook the asparagus on.
Who doesn’t love pickles? While these may not be a side dish per se, Quick Pickles are perfect on burgers or as a side to cut through heavier mains. The best part about this Quick Pickle recipe is that it teaches you how to quick pickle pretty much anything. I’m partial to the quick pickle red onion for burgers!
Vegan Bean Salad is a BBQ staple. It makes the perfect side dish that’s satisfying and flavourful. And the best part? It can totally be made ahead of time and ahead gets better the longer it sits in the fridge!
If you want to make a salad that is going to wow people, this Vegan Caesar Salad with Crispy Chickpea Croutons is it. It comes together in less than 30-minutes but is absolutely delicious.
Vegan BBQ Mains
This Strawberry, Walnut & Arugula Flatbread is an unexpected way to use summer strawberries in a savory dish that everyone will love.
If you love flatbread, you’ll love this Tomato, Arugula & Quick Pickled Flatbread. You can totally cook this on the BBQ, just adjust the cooking time slightly!
These Pineapple BBQ Tofu Skewers are the perfect balance of savory and sweet, and can be made using homemade BBQ sauce or store bought!
Vegan BBQ Dessert
What would a summer BBQ be without Strawberry Shortcake? This recipe may be different than what you’re used to since the shortcake is more on the savoury than sweet side. But it’s still delicious and pairs perfectly with sweet summer strawberries and coconut whipped cream.
